In “Way Cool” Keyboarding, we created a step-by-step approach to teaching students how to play from chord charts. You will not have to figure it out yourself. As a matter of fact, it is understandable that many piano teachers are inexperienced at this pop style of playing. I know that my classical training did not include playing from chord charts and I ended up teaching myself. Now I love the creativity and exploration that happens with my students and their chord charts. Very cool!
You and your students will begin with a few blocked chords in the right hand and later begin adding simple left hand rhythms in the bass. Once that is going well, other patterns are introduced to include in the right hand for variety. And of course, during every step of the way your students will be playing along with awesome backing tracks that provide the support they need to explore and improvise.
This beginning approach to chord playing will definitely be a hit among your students!
